Cryptocurrencies and digital assets continue to reshape financial markets, raising new opportunities - and complex challenges - for practitioners and other professionals.This seminar will provide a clear introduction to crypto and digital assets, before exploring the key legal and regulatory issues, including tax treatment, AML/CFT compliance, and consumer protection. We’ll also examine recent developments and cases as we consider the future outlook for this fast-moving space.
Presenter: Derek Roth-Biester is the founder of Criterion Law, a boutique technology and corporate / commercial law firm based in Queenstown. His technology practice includes advising on technology procurement, data privacy, AI and digital assets. Derek has a particular interest in bitcoin – in addition to being Secretary of the Bitcoin Policy Institute of New Zealand, he runs a bitcoin treasury strategy through Criterion and advises VASP clients on commercial matters and regulatory compliance. Derek’s 30 year legal career has seen him practising in the technology space for international firms in London, Hong Kong, Bermuda and the Cayman Islands. He was previously a partner at Meredith Connell in Auckland and Anderson Lloyd in Queenstown. Derek is also treasurer of the Hong Kong New Zealand Business Association.
